Promises Kept

by Wendy G., Executive Director

It has always been the policy of YGRR to allow dogs to stay with us for as long as it takes to find an appropriate home. It is one of the ways in which YGRR is different from many other rescues and shelters. YGRR and its Goldens enjoy this privilege because of our members' financial support.

I'm sure the readers of the Golden Times and visitors to the YGRR website have become familiar with the faces of Bo, the "Pair" BJ and Kelly, and Indy over the last several months as we have tried to find these very deserving dogs just the right new family.

The staff is very happy to report the following update on new homes for each of these special Goldens.

BJ #3259 and Kelly #3258
Arrival Date 09/01 Adoption Date 6/02
Condition: Kelly is blind and diabetic/ YGRR does not want to separate
them

On May 19th, Ann R. came to Riverview to attend YGRR's open house celebration. While taking a tour of the kennel, she saw BJ and Kelly and was so taken with them that she called the following week to discuss adoption. Due to the death of her Golden "Gus" at the end of March, Ann had no pets to enjoy her beautiful fenced in yard. She liked the fact that BJ and Kelly would provide companionship to each other while she was at work. All of Kelly's medical issues were discussed with Ann who remained undaunted and excited about the prospect of adopting this endearing brother and sister. She was willing to continue the same special diet that Sue Averill, YGRR's Kennel Manager, had developed for Kelly to manage her diabetes. BJ and Kelly now live in the country and are doing just fine. Ann reports that the pair is a big hit with her family and that she is continually amused with their antics. Ann knows Sue is available at anytime for questions and support.

Indy #3252
Arrival Date 8/01 Adoption Date 3/02
Issue: Compulsive Drinker/Separation Anxiety/High Energy

When Paul and Bridget P. met Indy, they couldn't get over what a beautiful boy he is. Indy was given formal approval by Mitzy, their resident 14 year old cat, when he first arrived in his new home by giving him nose rubs. They are now best friends! Indy's new dad is retired and participates in numerous walks and play times at the local ball field each day. Indy needed to be kept busy so this is the perfect family for him. Bridget reports no problems with separation anxiety or excessive drinking. Everyone who sees Indy on his walks comments on what a beautiful boy he is. It was love at first sight and Bridget reports that they will never part with him.

Bo #3307
Arrival Date 10/01, Adoption Date 5/02
Condition: Tongue paralysis/uncoordinated

George and Donna K. report that Bo (left) settled into his new home quickly and gets along with his new sister "Poochie" (right) YGRR #2878 just great. Poochie is very tolerant of Bo -- even when Bo literally walks on top of her when she is laying down. Bo and Poochie sleep together and seem to be really close friends. To deal with Bo's tongue paralysis, George and Donna are using an elevated eating tray for Bo which seems to make it easier for him to eat his meals. Although he has not tried to go up and down the basement stairs, Bo navigates the front door and pool stairs just fine. Bo loves to run around the pool while Poochie lays next to the edge looking for frogs. Bo really likes his walks and has become Donna's shadow when she is at home. Overall, George reports that Bo has acclimated very well. Both Donna and George are so used to having a towel handy to wipe Bo's chin and floor after he drinks that Poochie is the oddball since she does not need a towel! Both George and Donna say Bo is the perfect fit for their family and they couldn't be happier with this gentle boy.
