Max, YGRR #4464 |
Nine-year-old mellow Max was surrendered this winter when his owners faced the cruel reality of financial hardship and home foreclosure. Heartbroken, Max's family contacted YGRR. This senior boy had lived with a family that included a Chihuahua, a cat, and children. Max was described as a "good dog that loves to play with his tennis balls."
Max was admitted into the program and seen by the YGRR veterinarian. Upon examination Max was noted to be overweight and was immediately placed on a healthy diet to shed those unnecessary pounds. He was given a dentistry, had a small lipoma (fatty, benign tumor) removed, brought up-to-date on his vaccinations, and tattooed. Soon this senior gentleman was transported to Riverview where the staff got to know him better. During his all-but-brief stay, Max proved to be an extremely nice senior resident.
New adopters who came highly recommended by the YGRR Home Visitor were called to meet Max. As children this couple was raised with Golden Retriever family members. Now as new, adult dog owners they were hoping to adopt and love an older, yet active Golden. All went well at the adoption appointment and Max has settled in to his new home. He and his feline brother, Jim the Cat, are good friends. Max enjoys the safety of his fenced-in yard, daily walks and car rides. His owners called to tell us, "We absolutely adore Max! He is great. He loves his daily walks. He is an excellent walker on leash and a pleasure to be with. We really love having him home as part of our family!" Max can now look forward to a lifetime of love!

Brady (now Buddy), YGRR #4502 |
Handsome Brady is a happy one-year-old Golden boy. He was surrendered to a local shelter by his original owner due to digging out of the yard and running off. Unfortunately Brady's owner did not understand the consequences and safety issues of leaving a dog unattended and outdoors for extended periods of time with nothing to do. The Animal Control Officer of that community called YGRR knowing we would find Brady the most safe and appropriate forever home.
He was admitted into the program and brought to the YGRR veterinarian where he received a thorough examination. Brady was neutered, tattooed, brought up-to-date on his vaccinations and treated for a hot spot. This young boy had all the ingredients of a really good dog! At Riverview he was found to be a very friendly, typical energetic adolescent. The staff found him to be real pleasure and easy to handle. He truly loved people and playing with other dogs.
Brady's silly and lovable personality made him irresistible. Repeat adopters who had a long history with YGRR were called to meet Brady. They were ready to adopt the "right dog" to be a companion to their YGRR Golden Jamie, YGRR #4414. All went well at the adoption appointment and Brady's new family decided to change his name to Buddy. Buddy has already started obedience training and is responding well since he is so eager to please. Recently, Buddy's new mom told us "He is like a teddy bear. Jamie enjoys chasing him around the yard and they are becoming great friends!"

Lucky, YGRR #4497 |
Six-year-old Lucky had been forced to live outdoors without the comfort of his dog bed and the companionship of his master for two years. Lucky's owner called YGRR because his new wife did not like dogs and refused to allow his faithful boy indoors. YGRR's Adoption Coordinator worked quickly to admit Lucky into program before a rapidly approaching weekend Nor'easter.
Lucky was given a thorough examination and was found to be overweight, Lyme positive and have an irritation of his left eye (entropion). Lucky was put on a healthy diet, a course of antibiotics as treatment for the Lyme's, and received ongoing monitoring of his left eye while keeping the eye lashes trimmed. Future entropion surgery was recommended for his left eye should the irritation persist. Lucky was also brought up to date on his vaccinations, placed on a heartworm preventative, neutered, and tattooed.
Lucky deserved a dog-loving home--indoors! New adopters were called who came highly recommended by the YGRR Home Visitor. They had recently lost their beloved Golden to cancer. The family missed the special companionship a Golden Retriever brings and wanted to rescue a YGRR Golden. Upon meeting Lucky, the family knew he was the dog for them! They understood that YGRR will be there for him if entropion surgery is needed in the future.
These days, Lucky enjoys an active lifestyle and spends very little time alone. His adopters recently called, "Lucky is living in the lap of luxury and we are happy to provide it! He is a love and happily enjoys walks, jogging, and getting brushed. He fits right in with our family!" Lucky is lucky indeed!

Dutch, YGRR #4431 |
Three-year-old Dutch spent his days tied outside on a run and his nights in a crate in the basement. He had such severe, chronic ear infections that his family often heard him cry out as he tried to ease the pain by scratching. His owners called YGRR in the summer of 2007 and said they could not afford the veterinary care Dutch needed. He was described as a great, friendly boy who loves our toddler and loves to fetch tennis balls.
Dutch was brought to the YGRR veterinarian. During his exam, it was noted that he had severe inflammation of both ear canals, pyoderma (infection of the skin) over his entire body, and that his coat was coarse and sparce. Dutch was placed on a course of antibiotics and ear medications while the veterinarian waited on the results of his bloodwork. Not surprisingly, Dutch was found to be hypothyroid. This made sense since hypothyroidism could have easily contributed to many of Dutch's medical issues. Dutch was given a prescription of soloxine, a medication in pill form which easily treats this quite common condition in Golden Retrievers. Dutch stayed at Riverview for a number of months to give his body time to respond to the medications, baths, a healthy diet and fatty supplements. The staff found Dutch to be a happy, high-energy boy who loved to play with tennis balls.
Finally, Dutch's coat filled out and his ears were no longer painful and infected. This handsome Golden boy deserved a home where he would get the attention he needed. Repeat adopters were called who wanted a friendly dog that would enjoy their daily walks. They had no problem keeping on top of Dutch's chronic ear infections and giving medications when necessary. Dutch has settled right into his new home and has already made a trip to the veterinarian to make sure his ears also have a healthy transition! His new adopters couldn't be more delighted to have this sweet Golden boy as part of their family.

Bauer, YGRR #4494 |
Bauer is an adorable one-year-old Golden boy who was surrendered when his previous owner could not afford the surgeries to correct his elbow and hip dysplasia. She contacted YGRR because she did not have the finances to maintain any part of his medical care. Bauer was described as a "very good, very friendly, sweet puppy."
Bauer was admitted into the YGRR program and was seen by the YGRR veterinarian as well as an orthopedic surgeon. After assessment and consult, it was determined that Bauer be immediately placed on a supportive care program. This plan included instructions to maintain a healthy weight with joint supplements added to his diet and a moderate exercise regime to help the range of motion for his joints. Bauer proved to be a good surgical candidate. The recommendation was to monitor Bauer's on-going progress of his elbows and hips and that surgery should occur as needed in the future before Bauer turned six years old. After his exams, this happy boy was brought to Riverview. Bauer quickly settled into the routine at Riverview where the staff found him to be playful young dog.
It didn't take long for Bauer to be matched with his forever family. Experienced and knowledgeable repeat adopters of Griffin, YGRR #2665 and Cody, YGRR #3443 were called. They had recently lost Griffin and were ready to find another Golden friend for Cody. This couple had an active lifestyle that would give Bauer lots of healthy exercise. Bauer and his "new" brother Cody get along fabulously! Bauer enjoys his urban life and is walked three times a day. His adopters know that YGRR will be there for Bauer when surgery is needed in the future. In the meantime, the boys look forward to weekends when the family heads to north for lots of adventures at their New Hampshire house! |
