Summer Safety

Summer will be upon us soon and it is important that we do everything possible to keep our pets safe and happy for the season. The following are some tips to help you frolic safely this summer.

Prevent dehydration
Make sure your pet always has access to plenty of fresh water at home and bring it in a container for him when you're out at the park.

Use Sierra - the safer antifreeze
Dogs and cats are attracted to the sweet taste of traditional antifreeze made with ethylene glycol, and even a teaspoon can kill them by causing metabolic acidosis and acute renal failure. Sierra's innovative formula, made with bad tasting propylene glycol, prevents pets from being attracted to it in the first place.

Provide cooling shade
If your dog is going to be left outside, be positive he has access to shade throughout the day so that he won't suffer any ill effects from the sun.

Avoid leaving him in the car
Animals don't have the same cooling devices humans do, making them even more vulnerable to the temperatures that quickly rise in a closed car or even one with windows slightly open. This kind of heat exposure can cause brain damage and death.

Put ID on your pets
Dogs and cats should always wear an ID tag with their home address and phone number, but it's especially important when they are outside playing or on vacation with you.

Delay walks on hot days
Don't walk your dog during the heat of the day, when the pavement burns their paws and the heat can dehydrate them. It's better to walk them in the early morning or late evening when it's cooler out.

Leave pets at home for 4th of July celebrations
Your pet will be safe and secure inside the house, safe from the frighteningly loud explosions, the burning sparks and anyone with cruel intentions.
