Garden and Yard Cleanup Dangers

Autumn is here and the cleanup of our gardens is in progress. Keep your dog away when you are using a leaf blower. Blowers can pick up and throw small sticks or woodchips that can harm a nearby dog. If your community allows residents to pile leaves up in the street, make certain that your dog is on a short leash when walking along the street. Tall leaf piles will obscure drivers' vision and they may not see your dog ahead of you as you prepare to cross the street between leaf piles.

Rearranging our garages and sheds has become routine for many of us when cleaning up our gardens. Lawn mowers and garden tools move to the back. Gas cans are filled and snow blowers and shovels are moved up front for easy winter access. Many petroleum distillates will cause respiratory irritations to our dogs. Common irritants include gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, household lubricants (WD-40, 3-in-1) and Raid (petroleum based pesticide). If your four footed family member accidentally ingests any of these substances, call your vet immediately.
