Board Certified Veterinary Specialists

Board certified veterinary specialists can be compared to physicians who specialize in the treatment of human ailments. In both cases, they have received rigorous, standardized training beyond their medical degrees. A board certified veterinary specialist must pass a regimen of training that is administered by a specialty group, called a "college," that is approved by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

To become board certified, a veterinarian must have extensive post graduate training and sufficient experience, and must pass a credential review and examination set given by the given specialty group. The postgraduate work typically includes two to three years of clinical training, plus written and practical examinations to determine the scope of a candidate's knowledge. AVMA offers certification in more than twenty areas of veterinary medicine. The initials of the veterinarian seen by Amber stand for American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.

AVMA board certification is important to you and your dog for two reasons. First, it acknowledges the veterinarian's enhanced level of expertise in a specific area of veterinary medicine. Furthermore, board certification represents a national standard, which means that an AVMA board-certified veterinary cardiologist in one state has undergone the same rigorous training as a board-certified cardiologist in any other state.
